AMD Strix Point APUs were supposed to be “100” series originally
AMD made a last-minute change from 100 to 300, confirmed by the prototype laptop.
It may seem obvious and was already backed by some leaks, but now there is clear proof that the next-gen Ryzen AI CPUs based on Strix Point silicon were originally not called Ryzen AI 300. Instead, the flagship model was supposed to be called Ryzen AI 9 HX 170, which was later changed to Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. This confirms AMD skipped the 200 series directly to 300, which was supposedly a last-minute change.
Of course, this wouldn’t be as interesting if not for the fact that AMD also changed the integrated graphics naming. As we know, AMD has only two SKUs in the new lineup featuring either 10 or 12 Zen5 cores and either 16 or 12 RDNA3.5 CU units. Officially, the new 16CU integrated GPU is called Radeon 890M, yet the picture above shows that it was originally Radeon 880M. Such a GPU does exist, except it’s the new 12CU variant.

AMD announced two models in the new series, covering a wider range of TDP than the last-gen 8000 series. The new APUs are designed to work within a 15W to 54W range, meaning customers will now have to look closely for information on the maximum TDP set by the company. This is reminiscent of NVIDIA dropping the Max-Q naming, which led to the company enforcing the display of TDP data for each of the mobile GPU variants. Such information is not yet available for any of the new AMD Ryzen AI 300 laptops, so we look forward to learning how this will be handled.

AMD Ryzen AI 300 does not have a firm release date yet; however, we’ll probably hear a lot about these APUs as new products are announced and released. Who knows, maybe the last-minute change completely took some companies by surprise, and they had to redo or scrap their marketing materials altogether? ASUS was ready, just not with the hardware already inside the computer.
