AMD preparing Strix Halo with 120W TDP
The company is preparing next-gen APU series powered by Zen5 architecture.
AMD Ryzen-based APUs, based on Strix Halo silicon, are not expected to hit the market until next year. However, the company is at the active development stage, with many samples being shipped between labs and headquarters, some of which were spotted during transit.
The Strix Point APU is said to use various TDP settings ranging from 55W to 70W. It also appears that AMD is testing a 120W TDP solution expected to be the top-tier version. Such systems were recently spotted alongside 32GB and 64GB memory configurations.

The shipping manifests on the left side do not explicitly mention Strix Halo; however, the FP11 socket is currently exclusively associated with this new chip. In fact, the same shipping manifest site also lists FP11 Strix Halo. The 120W variant is most likely for the top SKU featuring 8 to 16 Zen5 cores and 40 RDNA3.5 Compute Units. This variant is said to support up to LPDDR5X-8000 memory through a 256-bit memory bus.

With memory soldered down to the motherboard, the board could be smaller as it wouldn’t need memory SODIMM slots. Coupled with a powerful APU replacing both CPU and GPU, this could lead to thinner laptop designs with more sophisticated cooling solutions.

The Strix Halo specs were recently leaked by one of the AMD OEMs who confirmed that the chip will also feature up to 60 TOPS through its built-in XDNA2 AI processor and will come equipped with 32MB of MALL memory. If previous rumors are to be believed, the Halo will launch early next year with an announcement expected at CES. AMD is now said to be introducing the Strix Point series with fewer CPU and GPU cores and lower TDP requirements, the true successor to the Phoenix/Hawk Point series.
