Radeon RX 8000 rumors point towards slower GDDR6 memory

According to respected hardware leaker Kepler_L2, the RDNA4 generation may be sticking to slower memory.

Kepler was among the first to reveal that AMD is scrapping its plans for big Navi4 GPUs, and this information is slowly being confirmed directly by AMD. As of now, there’s no sign of larger Navi GPUs that could potentially replace RX 7900 models in the near future. However, changes are to be expected in the mid-range and entry-level segments with the introduction of Navi 48 and Navi 44 GPUs based on the RDNA4 architecture.

These GPUs are expected to power cards like the Radeon RX 8800, 8700, 8600, and 8500 series, depending on whether one looks at the desktop or mobile lineup. AMD hasn’t confirmed the arrival time of such GPUs or the scope of the RDNA4 launch, but recent information suggests that next-gen GPUs might utilize relatively slower 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory, despite the expected mass production of faster GDDR7 memory by the of this year.

The 18 Gbps memory speed is already employed by some desktop GPUs like the RX 7900 GRE or RX 7700 XT, as well as all Navi 33 models. In the mobile form factor, this speed represents the maximum used by AMD.

In contrast, the next-gen GeForce RTX 50 series is expected to debut with 28 Gbps GDDR7 memory by year’s end. This speed doesn’t even reach the fastest GDDR7 speeds discussed by memory companies, which could eventually reach 36-37 Gbps, although not for the first-gen GPUs utilizing this technology.

What is probably important is that that little is known about RDNA4 Infinity Cache specs; these GPUs might not even require fast memory, as far as current information goes. There’s no indication that the RDNA4 series will be powering high-end models at the moment, and it’s possible that they won’t even have the same top speeds as the current high-end models.
