AMD Ryzen 8000F series, a cheaper alternative for desktop PCs
Pricing is lower than expected.
Today, AMD is launching its first Hawk Point desktop APUs, which will lack one of the best features of these processors: the integrated GPU. The Ryzen 8000G series, launched earlier this year, enabled new options for the AM5 platform. Users who do not need powerful graphics but require something more powerful than Ryzen 7000’s built-in RDNA2 GPU (with only 2 Compute Units) can now purchase the Ryzen 7 8700G APU with 16 RDNA3 Compute Units. A mobile variant of this APU is successfully used by modern handheld consoles, meaning it can enable gaming without a discrete GPU.
This is not the case with the newly released Ryzen 8000F series. The “F” descriptor means that both SKUs being announced today will have RDNA3 graphics disabled. The reason for their disablement is unclear, but it is presumably because the graphics were deemed nonfunctional during the testing phase before they were labeled as 8000G models.
The AMD 8700F comes with the built-in XDNA CPU enabled. This means that alongside the 8700G and 8600G, these are the only AM5 processors with a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU). However, the 8400F, being based on a smaller Hawk Point silicon, does not have this feature.
Now, AMD will offer an 8-core Zen4 processor called Ryzen 7 8700F and a 6-core version called Ryzen 5 8400F at an even lower price. It’s even lower than what Amazon leaked two weeks ago. In short, the 8700F should cost $269.99 while the 8400F should retail at $169.99.

Officially, AMD is pitting 8700F against Intel’s i5-14400F (retailing at $200) and 8400F against i5-13400F (which costs $185). Both CPUs are now available through all major retailers.
