AMD announces Anti-Lag 2: game integration now required, already available in Counter Strike 2

AMD Anti-Lag+ becomes Anti-Lag 2

AMD has announced its new Anti Lag technology, which is already available in one game.

In February, AMD announced that Anti-Lag would be reintroduced soon, but gamers had to wait another three months for the technology to arrive under a new name. The Anti-Lag+ technology was introduced alongside FSR3 and HYPR-RX technologies. This lag-reducing technology was supposed to work at the driver level, eliminating the need for game integration unless it was part of FSR3.

AMD quickly announced that several games already supported Anti-Lag+ at launch. However, it was soon discovered that using this technology could potentially lead to bans in games like Counter-Strike 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, PUBG, Apex Legends, and others.

As a result, AMD removed support for Anti-Lag+ by introducing a new driver that lacked this feature. Now, AMD is releasing a new driver with entirely new Anti-Lag technology, simply called Anti-Lag 2. Unlike Anti-Lag+, this new technology requires game integration, similar to the original Anti-Lag.

The new technology was developed in partnership with Valve, whose game initially did not work with Anti-Lag+, resulting in bans. This partnership ensures that no bans will be issued when using Anti-Lag 2 and that it has been thoroughly tested before deployment.

With the game-integrated Radeon Anti-Lag 2, the frame alignment is also applied in the game code itself and works in conjunction with the CPU pacing controlled by the driver to allow for better frame syncing. This leads to even lower click-to-response latency than what an in-driver only solution like Radeon Anti-Lag can deliver. Since Radeon Anti-Lag 2 is an in-game technology, it does require game developers to add it to their games, with Counter-Strike 2 being the first.

The good news is that Anti-Lag 2 now supports additional GPU architectures, including Radeon RX 5000/6000 and Ryzen 6000 iGPUs. Previously, this technology was only available for RDNA3-based GPUs.

Anti-Lag 2 is currently available as a technical preview. This is not a full release and is only available for one game, Counter-Strike 2. The game has already received an update, but to fully utilize this feature, you need to download a special driver from AMD (link here).

How to Use Radeon Anti-Lag 2 in Counter-Strike 2

  • Download and install our AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.5.1 for Anti-Lag 2 Technical Preview driver.
  • “AMD Anti-Lag 2.0” will then be ENABLED by default in the Counter-Strike 2 “ADVANCED VIDEO” settings menu.
  • Play Counter-Strike 2 with incredibly low click-to-response latency and win more matches!
  • Report any issues using the AMD Bug Report Tool, accessed using the button in the top right of the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition application.
  • Provide your feedback about Radeon Anti-Lag 2 on our AMD Red Team Community Forums.
